A Sunday evening Reset & Recharge

Restorative & Yin Yoga, Meditation, Gentle Breath work to stimulate the ventral vagal nerve. Tapping into the magic that exists in the present moment when we bring the nervous system into a state of balance. We utilise different restorative yoga and meditation techniques in order to ground our awareness into our bodies. Replenishing our energies by dropping deep into relaxation. This type of practise is incredibly rejuvenating and healing, everyone can benefit from a night of internal retreat. Suitable for all levels inc Pregnancy (some alternative options and modifications will be provided.) Rest, Recharge, Reset, Rejuvenate!

Ashtanga Yoga Mysore Style // Saturday 22nd July 9:30am - 11:30am - Tynemouth

Ashtanga in the Mysore Style basically means that everyone takes their own practice at their own pace, you count for yourself (in your head) and follow along with your own breathing rhythm. This leaves the teacher, in this case me, with the space to move around the room giving more hands on adjustment or more specific verbal instruction to you on an individual level. You don’t need to practise the whole series or use up the whole 2 hours, perhaps you choose to take a half primary followed by the closing sequence and a longer savasana. You also don’t need to be able to remember the whole sequence (cheat sheets will be provided!) Do let me know if you have any questions regarding the Mysore style or anything else.

Theme of the evening… SPRING!

Let’s allow the dark cocooning blanket of winter to drop away and find ourselves turning to face the light, slowly but surely we will emerge. As we journey deep into introspection within our Yin Yoga Practise we can bring with us the symbol of spring…

The season of seed planting - Sure we can plant seeds in the garden, or watch as nature around us slowly blooms but we can also witness this within our own being either actively or passively. We don’t have to push or force, as in nature patience is required when growing new life. But we can softly consider what we might like to bring into creation? What would we like to pull from the void space and into the light of our physical surroundings? How would we like to grow this year? How could we nurture that carefully and gently?

Effectively cocooning, releasing tension from the body with gentle stretching, bringing heat and spaciousness into our joints with tiny and restorative movements. Breathing our awareness deeper and deeper into the body. Finding ourselves lulled into a very deep sense of relaxation we drift through this type of a practise on an internal journey of calm ebb and flow of inhale and exhale. Along the way feeling our nervous system more regulated, our rest and digest mode able to take centre stage for a few hours of incredibly healing time.

Yin Yoga, Restorative Yoga, Yoga Nidra, NSDR (None Sleep Deep Rest), Binaural beats, Soundscape, Deep Relaxation, Deep Healing.

By releasing tension from the body with gentle stretches and long supported holds, at the same time as improving the quality of our breathing we help to regulate our own nervous system. The nervous system will move us into the ‘rest and digest state’ and out of the stress response, we will feel ourselves slowly entering into a feeling of equanimity or neutrality; where we can almost bathe in the present moment of sensations from body and breathing. Finding ourselves lulled into a very deep sense of relaxation we drift through this type of a practise on an internal journey of calm ebb and flow of inhale and exhale. This type of relaxed state is medicine for both the body and the mind / brain, sitting contrary to how we spend most of the rest of our waking days this type of rest state could be seen as a little internal holiday to transform the way we feel, hopefully bringing a little sparkle back behind our eyes. Whatever we need these few hours for, that they will deliver. Even if its just for the sake of being in a quieter space away from the needs of others for a short time to charge up your own batteries, ready to go back to those needs of others feeling more energised and able to serve.

After being inspired at a ‘Mysore Style’ Workshop I attended myself recently I have decided to start running a once monthly (if it interests enough of you) ‘Mysore Style’ session.

Ashtanga in the Mysore Style basically means that everyone takes their own practice at their own pace, you count for yourself (in your head) and follow along your own breathing rhythm. Join me in person for an Extended Yin Yoga Practice - Friday 12th August: 19:00 - 20:30

Geared towards improving mobility and flexibility but also toward cultivating deep relaxation. The session will be 90 minutes long and will incorporate elements of Yin and Restorative Yoga making the session appropriate for all, whether you have extensive experience with yoga or none at all. This will be a gentle and nurturing practise where we leave the mat feeling a whole lot better than when we arrived on it. A really lovely practice for a Friday evening as we can use it to buffer between the week behind us and the weekend ahead, using the time to replenish our energy and refresh ourselves for our Saturday and Sunday.

An extended practice surrounding the theme of safe development of strength, with our yoga practice in mind.

A couple of hours of experimentation with strength and conditioning drills aimed at different parts of the body to build up our strength and tackle some of the more challenging aspects of our practice. This will be a really fun workshop, great for those who have a dedicated yoga practice but equally good for anyone who just fancies a one off session of exercises and drills to build a bit of fire in the body on a Saturday morning.

This workshop will be similar to a couple of sessions that I have done previously which ended up being really well received and I think very beneficial for the yogis who attended. With the best of intentions we all wish we could run ourselves through these drills that we know are so good for us but we often find it difficult to do so on our own. It’s much easier with the camaraderie of a group to apply ourselves and come away really feeling that we have worked the body super well!

This is also the perfect space to be able to take a look at any particular postures that you might personally want to learn or work on. We will have lots of time to talk / play around with different postures and I am able to break down in more detail anything that anyone wants to work on, in a way that is not often possible in open classes. Places are limited to suit the space we will be practicing in and also to ensure that I can give you all a more individual type of attention.

Retreat Night - Spring Time Edition.

Spring, the season of hope, the season of new beginnings, of fresh starts, of recalibration. We gather together for our retreat evening ready to turn our gaze inward and see what spring is feeling like for us. To see where we feel hope or feel new ideas blossoming, to notice any blockage that might be surrounding these ideas. Any stagnations lingering that we need to break down and release. We do this deep in our subconscious, in our energetic body, communing with our higher self in this state of powerful relaxation.

With a combination of Restorative and Yin Yoga, Yoga Nidra and a specifically curated soundscape; we journey through our bodies and our breath to find this place of deep internal connection. A place where we strengthen our relationship with our intuition and our inner knowing to find clarity on any questions we may have about the season or our feelings toward the season. We enter into the waking dream space a place which sits beyond logic, beyond thinking, planning or processing. A place where answers seem simply to drift up into existence from a place beyond what we feel makes realistic sense. A place where we feel reconnected with our truth, our innate spark, a place where magic exists.

The last ‘Mini Retreat Night’ of the year! We will gather one more time for 2021 at what I think is perhaps the perfect time to recharge and replenish our own energy. To fill up our own energetic cup to the point in which it can spill over onto our metaphorical saucer. We can therefor serve others from that over spill rather than draining our own cup to do so, as can so easily happen at this very beautiful and magical but also potentially chaotic and pressure filled time of year.

We can perhaps begin to set our end of year intentions, look back over the previous 12 months to honour them, take stock of them and then be ready to let them go as we move through the final 6 weeks of the year. It’s a little cliche but it really is a perfect time to consider what you might like to leave in 2021 and what you want to carry forward with you into 2022, no pressure, no judgement just if things naturally come to mind we give them the space and time they need to be seen and heard.

We will take two hours of Yin and Restorative Yoga, Guided Meditations and inward journeying accompanied by (as ever) a beautiful and specifically curated soundscape.

We use our practise to help us to quieten the mind, to relax and tune into the body; through doing this we find ourselves connected and drawn into something deeper. It is within those deeper states that we can work through things that linger in our subconscious mind, or perhaps things we have stored deep within the recesses of our body. The things we perhaps don’t have the space for within our day to day but when we give them the time to come up and to be reprocessed we can leave our practise feeling a whole lot lighter. We don’t necessarily have to understand this process, at times it can feel very much beyond comprehension, what we do here at our retreat nights is simply to surrender to the process. Surrendering to the process, to the not totally knowing or understanding with our logical mind but being able to allow the body, the subconscious and the inner space to do the work on our behalf. Again this will leave us feeling so much lighter energetically, floating of our mats and home to bed!

As always I like to share these breakdowns of what reactions certain brainwave states are creating within your being because I think they sum up so so well the general feeling of these evenings…

Alpha brainwaves are dominant during quietly flowing thoughts, and in some meditative states. Alpha is 'the power of now', being here, in the present. Alpha is the resting state for the brain. Alpha waves aid overall mental coordination, calmness, alertness, mind/body integration and learning.

Theta brainwaves occur most often in sleep but are also dominant in deep meditation. Theta is our gateway to learning, memory, and intuition. In theta, our senses are withdrawn from the external world and focused on signals originating from within.

This event will take place at Shanti Bee Yoga Studio in Heaton. It is an in person event but an online option is available for anyone too far to travel or who just prefers to cosy up at home.

Another in our series of ‘Deep Dive’ workshops helping us to delve into our Ashtanga Vinyasa Practice. As with the previous workshops that we have done within the series I wanted to be able to spend some dedicated time to breaking a certain topic down in a detailed way. This is something we don’t always have time to do in our weekly classes but with these extended workshops we can really take that time, therefor expanding on our understanding of our Ashtanga practise as well as deepening our understanding of our bodies. Hopefully coming away feeling that we have peeled back another layer of the endless internal onion that is Yoga.

For this particular workshop we will be looking at the fundamental strength elements needed to be built up in order for us to, eventually, lift ourselves up and jump (or float, one day!) ourselves back and forwards again! We will look at some core strengthening drills, shoulder and back body strengthening drills. We will try to create a really playful environment using props to experiment with and seeing what might help us to open up new little pockets of body knowledge and awareness within this particular area of our practise

You don’t necessarily need to be anywhere close to actually jumping back or through to get a lot out of this workshop, it will be geared towards giving you lots of things to chew on and digest in the coming months within your practise. I find that winter is a really good time to allow things to percolate within our yoga practises especially the parts which require less in the way of flexibility (which isn’t necessarily the friend of the cold) strength for me is a great element to work on in the colder months!
